How to Select the Best Lure for Spring Bass Fishing

Want to know some tips on how to select the most effective lure for your spring bass fishing adventure? Join us for this quick read!

Choosing a lure all depends on what time of year it is, and therefore the behavior of the bass. In the early spring, these guys are residing in cold water deep below the surface. By late spring, they have migrated to their spawning grounds in warmer, more shallow water. Here's a break down.

Early Spring (Cold Water: 40-55°F)

  • Jerkbaits – Suspending jerkbaits mimic struggling baitfish, making them deadly in cold water.

  • Lipless Crankbaits – These create a lot of vibration and work well when bass are staging near drop-offs.

  • Jigs – A slow-moving jig with a craw trailer is perfect for cold, lethargic bass around cover.

Mid-Spring (Warming Up: 55-65°F)

  • Spinnerbaits – The flash and vibration help in murky water and windy conditions.

  • Chatterbaits – A vibrating jig that works great around grass and shallow cover.

  • Squarebill Crankbaits – These deflect off rocks and wood, triggering reaction strikes.

Late Spring (Pre-Spawn/Spawn: 65-75°F)

  • Texas-Rigged Soft Plastics – Craws, worms, and creature baits excel for bed fishing.

  • Swimbaits – Perfect for imitating bluegill or shad near spawning flats.

  • Topwater Lures – As the water warms, poppers and frogs become effective for aggressive bass.
